But, if you are buying computers like from Asus or Lenovo that come with the OPK version of Office 2013 pre-installed, and you buy a Product Key Card in the little blue box for something like Home & Business edition, you must use a Microsoft account to install it. It have worked on this for a week, talked to several departments at Microsoft and my distributor, and have determined there is no simple workaround.
I handle IT for a small church. We have volume lic for a number of products including Office 2013. Yesterday i had to do a online repair of Office 2013 to one desktop. Afterwards it asked for a key. I input our vol MAK lic key and it says it is for vol lic and not for that version. Did the online repair change the version? Can I load the vol lic version on top and be OK?Thanks
I have run into the same exact issue. It is a mess to attempt to re-install Office 2013 trying to figure out what selection on the list to choose. Often times I will just activate the product via phone with Microsoft manually.

So my company recently purchased about 100 Copies of Office 2013 "Pro" and "Home and Bussiness". Unfortunatly our company decided to save a few dollars and only purchased the Product Key Card packages and not the VLM or OEM version. So there are no disks. In order to install Office now with this type of packaging you must create a Microsoft account so that it can generate a new Proct key code for office to install !?! And you can only register a total of 5 Office products under one account...Seriously! For me I must create 20 different accounts in order to install all of my copies! As if IT Admins didnt have enough to do!
Dash is correct in that MS requires you to buy a particular edition of windows/office for large deployment scenarios. You are only allowed up to 5 installs using retail/OEM media, and apiercy is also right in that a license is tied to a piece of hardware. If you swap hardware in an enterprise environment, you buy a new set of licenses with the new hardware, and the existing license transfers out with the old hardware. We deal with this scenario all the damned time, and had it clarified for us by our VAR we buy licenses from. It's how MS really makes all their money. Luckily we are a non profit, and pay significantly reduced license fees, but it's still how it works nonetheless.
I am not arguing any of that. It is clear that what he purchased was not the best solution for his environment for the reasons you listed and the reasons the OP listed. What I don't understand is why Microsoft "tempts" people into doing this by making one version (in this case the WRONG version) cheaper? The volume license should be the same price or cheaper than this other version. This *IS* the case with office 2013 professional, where the MOL version is cheaper than the retail box.
Well to finally put an end to this entire mess I was over ruled in the end. Im stuck with what I have. So unfortuanly what I must do is register each key card to a microsoft account then get the installation key so that I can install Office. One good thing though is that Microsoft claims that you can only register 5 Office products to one email address, However im up to 9 on one account. I plan on doing ten on each account but it will make it easier albeit not much easier.
My situation: getting in machines with OEM office product key (just like with older versions), software preinstalled. You can activate directly with the product key, and Office uses your domain info instead of the MS account.
How my case is relevant: Well, as I couldn't authenticate, I went googling for what might be the problem. Many MS forums pointed to corruption on the installs and suggested running an online repair (I would not recommend that to anyone). And the online repair managed to uninstall office on one of the machines before it realized that it could not get to the MS servers to download all the appropriate software. 2ff7e9595c
